Of the many barbs that have come India’s way for the Supreme Court’s overturning of the Delhi HC decision on decriminalising consensual same sex relations, one has come from the International Aids Society (IAS)—the biggest association of HIV professionals across 176 countries of the world. In a letter to the President, the IAS argues “…punitive and discriminatory laws targeting LGBT people can push them to the margins of society, sacrificing their dignity and rights and that this fuels the HIV epidemic”. It further speaks of the “dismay” and “disappointment” that the ruling has brought.
