The Supreme Court of India in its landmark judgment recognized India’s long marginalised transgender community as a third gender and called on the government to implement policies to end discrimination and to ensure equal treatment of transgender individuals. The two-judge bench said in its ruling: “Transgenders are also citizens of India. The spirit of the constitution is to provide equal opportunity to every citizen to grow and attain their potential, irrespective of caste, religion or gender. The transgenders will now be considered as OBCs and will get the same reservation rules as OBCs in education and employment.
