In ten years, 10,000 killed in road accidents

At least 10,000 people have lost their lives in various road accidents in the last five years in Assam, according to a data revealed by state police. The police report also said that 26,352 accident cases were reported in the said period.

Around 4403 cases of accidents were reported in the year of 2007.

Similarly, 4683 accidents took place in 2008,  4869 in 2009, 5828 in 2010
 and 6569 in 2011.

Surprisingly in Guwahati city alone, 3769 accident cases were reported in last five years which killed 1303.

Around 14413 accident cases were reported on the national highways passing through the state in last five years.

 A police source told TSI that bad condition of roads and negligence of drivers were the main causes behind these accident cases.

“We have observed that road accidents are increasing day by day. I think many accident cases occurred due to the use of alcohol while driving. Every day we have to treat more than 15 people injured in road accidents,” said a doctor at Guwahati hospital.

“The people of the state still lack knowledge of traffic rules. In Guwahati we often encounter the experience that the drivers do not follow the traffic signal and do not allow the pedestrians to cross the roads in zebra crossing,” said Violet Baruah, SP CID.

Social activist and retired professor of Manik Rai said that while the number of vehicles increased on the roads, the roads have not been widened and on the other hand inexperienced drivers  and teenagers are seen violating traffic rules causing road accidents.
