Tarla Dalal of the easy recipes passed away at the age of 77. The Padma Shree awardee leaves behind a collection of over 17,000 recipes and 170 cookbooks. She was India's first celebrity chef, and among the top five bestselling in the world, but one who seemed as familiar as a mother-in-law. Her television show and website were hugely popular with cooking neophytes and with those looking to experiment with food. And to think it all started because she wanted to please the taste buds of the man she was married to! If the muthiya made it to South Indian homes and the vada pav to homes in the East, it was largely due to Dalal’s effortless pushing of regional boundaries. Why she even spoke of Indianising Japanese cuisine by perking up the sauces, making the tempuras spicier and flavouring the noodles with chillies.  An avid bridge player, she loved to spend time at her farm in Pune where she grew strawberries and potatoes.
