Punjab Congress demands emergency Assembly session on FDI

With the ruling Akali Dal-BJP alliance opposing foreign direct investment, the Punjab Congress Tuesday demanded emergency session of the Assembly.

A party delegation led by the Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar submitted a memorandum to the Governor Shivraj Patil.

The memorandum said the state government, for political compulsions, had opposed FDI in multi brand retail, which in fact might be beneficial for Punjab’s farmer and industry and in giving much needed flip to state’s economy. It claimed that such policy issues should be discussed in the assembly and government must give a reasoned reply for positioning against FDI in retail.

Another important issue that the Congress would like to take up is the imposition of fresh taxes in the state to mobilise about Rs. 900 crore after the alliance government presented tax free budget.

The memorandum also referred to the resignation by Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike. He had to resign after news of embezzlement of panchayat and border area grants involving his PA and son surfaced. The Congress has demanded inquiry by a legislative committee.
