Shankersinh Vaghela has come a long way, from the Jan Sangh-BJP to the Congress. He rebelled against chief minister Keshubhai Patel and, aided by dissident BJP MLAs, became CM. But he faced a rebellion soon enough. The low profile Suresh Mehta replaced him. Mehta says, “Shankersinh was so cornered that he rebelled. It was a hit out or get out situation” Vaghela parted ways with the BJP and formed the Rashtriya Janata Party (RJP). In the 1998 Assembly polls, he won only four seats. Now, he is a Congressman and Union Textile Minister.
