I just kind of fell into it actually. I was always interested in theatre. I was a very shy boy, and my teachers recommended me to go out and do something rather than sitting and reading. I started doing theatre when I was about nine. I just kept at it. It became a very interesting and warm way to meet people.
I have been studying yoga for 40 years with numerous teachers in a wide variety of different paths of yoga. These teachers included many Indian yoga teachers such as BKS Iyengar, TKS Desikachar, Pattabhi Jois, and Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. In the course of my own personal evolution of my yoga practices, I had reached a juncture where the philosophy and method of my yoga practice had significantly deviated from my earlier paths.
Being a strong vegan sounds like an extreme contradiction in terms too many. After all how can one build muscle and serious strength without animal protein? Not only do I prove that it is indeed possible through my own example, as I have been a vegetarian for over twenty years and a vegan for over fifteen years; many athletes prove it as well, such as mixed martial arts fighters Mac Danzig and Nick Diaz.
I’ve been a sportsman all my life, so when you are playing sports all your life you don’t realise the importance of it. But when you quit sports and pick up some bad habits, you realise that you don’t feel so good.
By March of 1975, at the age of 23, I suspected that a disease had taken on a physical form inside my body. Something was terribly wrong.
