Sex scandal hits Doordarshan in Kashmir

The conflict hit region of Kashmir has been for last one week a gossip monger’s paradise over a red handed arrest of a well-known female anchor of Doordarshan and a ruling National Conference MLC Altaf Ahmed Kaloo.

The female who anchored the popular show “Good Morning J&K” was arrested last week by police in a houseboat inside Nageen Lake at the busy Hazratbal area of Kashmir, for “committing obscene act at a public place” along with the MLC under section 294 of RPC and later released on bail.

Consequently, the controversial anchor was banned from hosting the show by  Ashok Jailkhani, Additional Director General (ADG) of Doordarshan stationed in DD Headquarters in New Delhi.

Also, Director of the Doordarshan Kendra in Srinagar Shammi Shair was removed from her posting for colluding with the anchor and was later summoned to New Delhi.

Meanwhile, Director of Doordarshan Kendra in Leh Qayoom Wadera has been appointed as the new Director of Doordarshan Srinagar Kendra. Police in Kashmir while continuing investigations in the case remains tightlipped about its moves.

Earlier in 2006, Kashmir was rocked by an organized sex scandal led by one Sabeena who was later arrested under Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA). A mob of almost 2000 people had set her house on fire in protest which led to the destruction of crucial evidence, according to sources.

Several ministers, politicians, bureaucrats and police officials alleged to be part of the sex scandal escaped without much difficulty even though the high profile case which had the entire country in shock was transferred to the CBI.

Later in 2009, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Beigh had leveled serious allegation saying Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was part of the scandal being probed by the CBI leading to pandemonium in the assembly for several days.

While Abdullah submitted a conditional resignation to the Governor, the CBI later dismissed the charges of the PDP, giving clean chit to the young chief minister of the troubled state.
The latest case has raised several eye balls and has remained a hot topic of discussion, even as local dailies in Jammu & Kashmir continue to report the developments in the case.
