Rhino population up in Pobitora National Park

The population of Asiatic rhinoceros in the Pabitara National Park has increased, according to the Assam Forest department.

A total of 93 rhinos are found in the national park against previous population of 84 in 2009, an increase by 12 per cent, claimed department sources on Wednesday.

In presence of Assam’s principal chief conservator (Wildlife) Suresh Chand, wildlife experts and some officials of NGOs conducted a census to find out the actual number of rhinoceros in the park. They found that out of 93 rhinos, 35 were female, 14 below one year and 20 were full-grown mammals.

The sources further added: "During this period, the population of rhinos increased to 104. But of these, eight rhinos were trans-located in the Manas National Park and three were killed by poachers."

Since 2005, no poacher entered the park. But in 2011 three rhinos were killed by the poachers.;

The Forest Department has also been conducting the census of tigers in the Kaziranga National Park with camera tapping. For this purpose, the Forest Department with the NGOs identified as many as 233 tiger corridors and installed 200 sophisticated cameras.
