Movie Review: Lootera

Lootera is one of those films which makes me think Bollywood indeed is much more than cliched love stories, unrealistic plot lines and characters which leave a bad taste in the mouth.It is a rare film. One which doesn't give in and try to be popular. One which is truly inspired by O. Henry's Last Leaf.

In a delicate but brilliant cinematographic tightrope walk, Vikramaditya Motwane, keeps the movie where it belongs - in a strange world where love comes in many forms. If you have read the Last Leaf, you know of the hauntingly beautiful ending O. Henry stirs up. While Lootera does manage a fantastic ending, it does lag slightly in the middle.

However, all of that is overcome by the scintillating performances by the lead pair. Ranveer Singh has matured a lot as an actor and Sonakshi Sinha, well lets just say, she is quite the chameleon, changing her acts from the first to the second half with great control and skill. Whereas, the pair had a very nicely written back story, some of the other characters could have been shown in a brighter light.

Visually the locations are very well chosen reminiscent of Satyajit Ray's Charulata and the old Bengal Rajbaris. The score by Amit Trivedi with its soft, high notes, plays perfectly to make the movie, a world to lose yourself in.

After Udaan, Vikramaditya Motwane's mega budget film doesn't sell his soul. It provides lovely cinema to an audience who have grown tired of the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani style charades...
