Counting the tigers

A nation-wide tiger count by the National Tiger Conservation Authority got underway in Kerala’s forests stretching across Wayanad, Nilambur, Periyar and Agasthyamala.To be carried out by 2,088 field staff, this is a once in four year exercise. Phase 2 and 3 will be carried out by the Wildlife Institute of India using camera traps and remote sensing data. Counts will be made using carnivore sign survey, finding out the trail of tigers and laying out of transects to monitor animal population.
