The Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 and the anti- Sikh riots of 1984 have been the darkest chapters in post- Independence history. The government and indeed the people of India must learn lessons from their mistakes and improve communal relations by ensuring that such misdeeds are not repeated at any cost. Meanwhile, the media is responsible for making a hue and cry on trivial issues as it has nothing more to broadcast. A separate law providing exemplary punishment for misuse of religion and caste for political gains has been suggested by the Liberhan Commission report. It must include misuse of regionalism. A strict law should be enacted to not only impose financial penalties but also imprisonment.
