With reference to When death comes calling edition (TSI November 12, 2007). BPOs have promised to take measures to ensure that their employees reach safely from their homes to work and back. However, this is not just about the BPO industry. Millions of women employed in other industries are working night shifts and are as vulnerable to violence and rape. All employers, not just those in the BPO sector, need to take steps to protect their employees. Following the murder of a call centre employee, the police, be it Pune or Bengaluru, has drawn attention to the failure of BPOs to provide safe transport for their employees. They have a point. But what are they doing to address the insecurity that women encounter every day on the streets of the city? Women need to feel safe on the streets and in their workplaces and homes. The government cannot shirk from taking responsibility in the matter.
