The article 'Here comes the prince' (TSI November 26, 2007) on the coronation of Rahul Gandhi as the heir apparent to the Congress throne and to the topmost echelons of the party leadership clearly brought out the designs of the party leadership to perpetuate the dynastic rule. Yet Rahul, like his father, comes across as a resourceful man who has the country’s best interests in mind. His clarion call to usher in an era where merit would be the sole criterion for advancement in the party ranks is certainly a step in the right direction though it remains to be seen how far he will be able to implement it in his own party which has become notorious for encouraging sycophants and family retainers relegating merit to the back burner. Rahul would however be doing a great service to the country if he were to be able to rid the party of the old bogeys who have outlived their usefulness.
