Serena Williams thrashed out of Australian Open

The Australian Open 2012 on Monday witnessed the biggest upset in the women singles. The five-time champion Serena Williams was thrashed by an unseeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova.

Williams fell in straight sets to Makarova. The 6-2, 6-3 loss to an unseeded player will haunt Williams for a longer period. With this win the 23-year old Makarova has got the first career grand slam quarter-final appearance.

Makarova's powerful hitting and continuous shots from difficult angels kept Williams on toes. The Russian took four match points before sealing the fourth-round clash.

Williams, 30, had won 41 of her past 43 matches at Melbourne Park. It was expected that she will go up to the final stage of the first grand slam of the year.

Makarova was extremely delighted after this triumph. The win in straight sets against Serena Williams meant a lot to her. After this unexpected victory the Russian said, “I don't know what to say.”

Since 2005 it was Williams’ first loss to a player outside the top 50 in a grand slam. She was lured into a total of 37 unforced errors, compared to 17 by the Russian.
