Though included for the lone Twenty-20 International on Wednesday at the Old Traford Stadium, Kevin Peitersen has been left out of the squad for the ODI series against India starting September 3rd.
Geoff Miller, the national selector, said that the decision to rest Pietersen was taken in line with the policy on managing player workloads, though there will be plenty of opportunity for England players to rest in the coming months.
England have a relatively light international schedule this winter with only five one-dayers and a Twenty20 international in India scheduled before Christmas.
"The decision to omit Kevin Pietersen from the one-day squad is in line with our policy of sensibly managing player workloads and will give the opportunity to another batsmen to test himself batting at number four," Miller said.
Despite reports that he intended to retire from one-day international cricket after the World Cup earlier this year, Pietersen has continued to play for England in all three forms of cricket and appeared in all five matches in the home one-day series against Sri Lanka earlier in the season.
