This refers to your editorial “Our MPs always have a consensus...!” (TSI, Aug 30-Sept 5). Arindam Chaudhuri has correctly questioned the need of their salary hike, since our MPs generally belong to well-off sections of the society. However, if the Members of Parliament deserve higher remuneration, they also have to perform in exemplary fashion. From all available accounts, several MPs have remained inactive in the Parliament. They have neither asked questions nor participated in discussions, but remaining in the limelight for their proximity to the powers-that-be in their party. There is, however, every reason to encourage young MPs and enthuse them. After all, they represent the future and should be encouraged to treat politics as a profession that is founded on ethics and values. For this alone, MPs’ salaries need to be raised right away without any further delay.
