Indian beauty : Not beautiful enough

On Thursday, the international magazine 'People' released a list of top 10 most beautiful women of world. Though it is said that one can not measure beauty, luckily People's magazine found a way and created this list like every year.

As soon as you see this list, one thing that certainly creeps into your mind is that why there is not a single Indian name on the list. Is India suddenly devoid of any beautiful women that not even a single Indian women gets featured in this list?
Indian women have always attracted the attention of world through their charm and enigma that they carry but off late there has been a certain downslide in the recognition of that beauty.
There was a time when Indian women won all the available beauty pageants. In the year 2000 right from Miss World, Miss Universe to Mrs. World, all the events were won by Indian beauties but after that it has been 11 years and not a single win yet.
So what is the reason behind such a U-turn and why from a country with sprawling beauties India suddenly turned into a Zombieland. For some it is just a market strategy, like famous designer Anju Modi who thinks that this whole list is a sham. “Who decides the criteria and who judges the options? “ says Anju.
“I simply don't believe in such lists because I don't see the whole point in crowning these women by yourself. I mean aren't the beauty pageants the one who do that?” Modi asks amusingly.
Even Shayla Garg, a PR professional shares the same opinion. “I think it is all a market gimmick. When the big cosmetic companies wanted to enter the Indian market they showered all the titles on Indian women now that there purpose is solved, the spell has dried.” said the 23 year old. On being questioned that why do you think no Indian women was there on the list she quips “Because Aishwarya Rai is on maternity leave.”
For fashion and lifetstyle journalist Lina Pegu, it is all a popularity meter. “It is not that Indian women are not beautiful, it is just that they are not that popular. Whatever you may say but the fact remains that on the popularity charts Indian women do lay low and that is the reason that they never make it to the top.” said Lina.
But isn't Indian beauty supposedly everywhere. You have Freida Pinto gracing Hollywood and sharing the limelight with the high and mighty of the industry. We have supermodels like Lakshmi Menon and Ujjwala Raut walking for top designers internationally and then we have our very own Sonam Kapoor making headlines by sitting in the front row at London Burberry Fashion week with hot shots of the fashion and entertainment world. So then where do we lack behind?
"I think the fact that Indian fashion and entertainment industry is still treated differently than the Western industry and this is what hinders the judgement. Moreover, the magazine is a major American gossip magazine and so the list is heavily inclined in their favour.” says Manshi Sinha, a DU student.
She quickly adds,” Who needs a gossip magazine to recognise Indian beauty, we themselves are talented enough to do that.”
Well, that's true after all Sunita Williams, Kalpana Chawla, Mother Teresa, Saina Nehwal, etc are famous in their own respective fields and they are all beautiful in every aspect. As Confucius rightly said ' Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it '
