In reference to the editorial by Arindam Chaudhuri, “Our MPs always have a consensus...!” (TSI, Aug 30-Sept 5). The Joint Parliamentary Committee should have sought for MPs salary hike rather than that of secretaries at the Centre. Salaries ought to be linked to work and responsibility, not to an archaic table of precedence. And perhaps MPs – as representatives of the people – also need to consider where they rank in the perception of the citizenry. MPs are prevented only from occupying offices of profit under the government but they are otherwise free to conduct their businesses as they see fit, like lucrative law careers, industrial conglomerates, agricultural cooperatives or newspapers. But this facility is not available to civil servants. So there is something unseemly – indecently self-serving parliamentarians sitting down to recommend pay hike for themselves!
