Four Rhinos were translocated to Manas National park from Kaziranga National park under the Indian Rhino vision 2020. Among the four Rhinos, three were females and the fourth was a young male Rhino. Yesterday they were tranquilized in the Bagori range of Kaziranga National Park and were carried to the Manas National Park with utmost care. Later, they were freed in the Bura-Burijhar area of Manas National Park.
Assam government has now taken steps to implement the Indian Rhino vision 2020. As a part of this program the state forest department has already translocated six Rhinos to Manas National park from Kaziranga and Pabitora National Park. The Rhino translocation programme is a joint venture of Indian Rhino Vision (IRV) 2020, the world wild fund (WWF), International Rhino Foundation (IRF), Bodoland Territorial Council and US Fish and wildlife service. This programme it is intended to increase the population of one horned rhinos from 2,500 to 3,000 in north India by 2020.
It is noteworthy that 85 percent of Rhino population of North-India is found in Kaziranga National Park. Also there are more than 100 Rhinos in Pabitora National Park but due to its compact area, the national park cannot bear the burden of excess population of Rhino. Therefore the Assam government has decided to translocate rhinos from this national park.
In order to protect the translocated Rhinos in Manas National Park, Assam government has constructed five anti-poaching camps and also the Bodoland Territorial Council has created 13 new guard posts in the park.
