Four more infants deaths were reported in Malda Hospital on Tuesday taking the toll to 36 in the last seven days.
Though the doctors at the hospital have denied the number and claimed that only two newborns died in past 24 hours, out of which one was admitted with severe respiratory problems.
“The maximum numbers of newborns are admitted in the hospital at the last stage,” said, H Ari, Malda Medical College and Hospital superintendent.
Ari said, “No hospital can save such infants in serious condition.”
The hospital staff has once again complained about the lack of infrastructure at the hospitals but assured that the number of beds will increased very soon.
Two babies died in front of state Social Welfare and Child Development Minister, Sabitra Mitra, when she visited the Malda Hospital on Monday.
Mitra, herself an MLA from Malda district, had complained about the lack of infrastructure at the hospital and ordered the authorities to make available all the facilities.
