India and Nepal have amended a bilateral transit treaty which will facilitate the export of goods from a third country through India. While earlier only goods of Nepalese origin were allowed to be exported through India to third countries, the amendment will facilitate the transit of goods of third country origin exported from Nepal. The most important outcome of this will be that goods imported from third countries will be open to re-export after value addition. Other possible changes include facilitating the import of bulk cargo from the Kolkata port through the Jogbani-Biratnagar land routes.
