Chemical weapons, AIIMS bills passed in Lok Sabha

A bill for regulating chemical weapons in accordance with international convention and another to set up more AIIMS-like institutes were passed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday amidst opposition din demanding prime minister's resignation.

As BJP and its allies raised slogans, the Chemical Weapons Convention (Amendment) Bill, 2012, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2012, were passed by voice vote.

The AIIMS bill will replace an ordinance which allowed the six AIIMS-like institutes to become operational from Sep 15.

The Chemical Weapons Convention (Amendment) Bill seeks to amend the Chemical Weapons Convention Act, 2000, which was enacted to give effect to the convention on the Prohibition of the development, production, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons and on their destruction.

India had signed the convention Jan 14, 1993.
