Moraji Desai was the Chief Minister of Bombay when police opened fire at Flora Fountain. About 105 activists of the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti were killed. That paved the way for a separate state of Maharashtra with Bombay as its capital. A few years later, the acerbic cartoonist Balasaheb Thackeray launched the Shiv Sena that promptly started a campaign against South Indian 'outsiders'. His nephew Raj Thackeray is now targeting North Indian 'outsiders'. The battle for the soul of Bombay as a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic city of migrants continues.
