Two new metro bridges to come up over the Yamuna

Delhi Metro will construct two more bridges on river Yamuna to widen its reach to more residential areas in the national capital as part of its ambitious Phase-III project.

The bridges will be part of the Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar and Janakpuri-Kalindikunj corridors, which have been approved by the Centre as part of the Delhi Metro's Phase-III that would add another 103 km of the capital to its network.

Delhi Metro had earlier built two bridges on the river Yamuna during its Phase-I and II projects. While a bridge connects Kashmere Gate with Shastri Park station, the other connects Indraprastha with Yamuna Bank in east Delhi.

Having got the approval for its Phase-III, Delhi Metro has invited bids for construction of the two bridges across the river.

The bridge on the Janakpuri-Kalindikunj corridor will have fourteen spans across river Yamuna along with Okhla Barrage at Kalindi Kunj and will be constructed about 85 meters downstream of the existing Okhla Bridge, the tender document states.

The bridge piers will be such that these do not obstruct the water way of the existing Okhla Barrage bridge upstream.

The bridge on the Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar metro line will have fifteen spans and will be constructed about 83 meters downstream of the existing Nizammudin Road Bridge.

Decks for the implementation of the Phase-III were cleared when the Empowered Group of Ministers  on Urban Infrastructure cleared the project, bringing comfort to a number of unconnected areas and the busy Ring Road.

The EGoM had on August 9 cleared the proposal at a cost of Rs. 35,242 crore including Central taxes.

The Janakpuri-Kalindi Kunj corridor provides connectivity to the South-eastern parts of Delhi with the western part and will integrate existing stations at Janakpuri West, Hauz Khas and Nehru Place enabling commuters to go to Dwarka and Gurgaon.

A major portion of this corridor will run along the outer ring road.

The Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar corridor will provide connectivity to the northern, western and eastern parts of Delhi.

The route provides integration with DMRC's existing lines at Azadpur, Netaji Subhash Place, Shivaji Park, Rajouri Garden, Dhaula Kuan and INA.

Most of the portion of Ring Road is covered by this corridor and prominent areas like Wazirpur Industrial area, Netaji Subhash Place District Centre, Britannia Food Factory, ESI hospital, Rajdhani College, Narayana, Mayapuri, Dhaula Kuan, Moti Bagh, INA, AIIMS, Mayur Vihar, Anand Vihar, Welcome and Yamuna Vihar are connected with this route.
