Pune blasts: Yet another security lapse!

Five low intensity blasts in Pune on Wednesday have reopened memories of German Bakery blast near the Jewish Chabad House and the Osho Resort in Koregaon Park in which 17 people were killed and 65 others were injured.

Pune Police Commissioner Gulab Rao Pol described the explosions as an act of mischief but Union Home Secretary R K Singh said terror angle cannot be ruled out since it seems to be a planned attack.

The explosions occurred at Jangli Maharaj(JM) road at spots near Balgandharva Theatre, Dena Bank branch, a McDonald food outlet and Garware bridge.

The blasts have once again raised fingers at serious security loopholes in the system.

Firstly, the area where the blasts occurred has many shops. People have gathered to shop for Raksha Bandhan on Thursday. Despite Pune being a victim of deadly bomb blast in 2010, the security cover was abysmal. Luckily the blasts were of low intensity otherwise the casualties could have crossed the German Bakery blasts.

Secondly, Sushil Kumar Shinde, who took over as Union Home Minister Wednesday, was due to have visited the city this evening but the trip was cancelled. The intelligence agencies should have had information that such a thing was about to happen.

Meanwhile, security has been stepped all over the country after the blasts.
