Writer is the backbone of any film: Iyengar

Screen writer, dialogue writer and lyricist Niranjan Iyengar is a new name in the industry. After writing dialogues for the hits like Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and My Name Is Khan, Niranjan is again ready to entertain the cinemagoers with his two more movies Heroine and Student of the Year.

Tell us something about your journey in bollywood?

I began my career as a journalist in 1991. I worked as assistant director in 1996. For three years, I worked with Manish Malhotra. When I wrote the book ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, Karan Johar suggested me to begin writing dialogues. This is how I began writing scripts.

Who is your source of inspiration?

Gulzar Sahab inspired me a lot since the beginning. I have always liked his songs and his writings have impressed me a lot.

You have so far worked with almost every prominent producer like Karan Johar, Madhur Bhandarkar and many others. How was the experience?

It’s great. I have good relations with everyone I have worked for. I have worked with Karan and Pooja Bhatt and both are my good friends. I worked with Madhur Bhandarkar in Fashion and now we are doing Heroine.

You are from South India, how did you manage to adapt to Hindi?

I faced no such problem in working in Hindi. Though I don’t consider my Hindi as good but I think that others’ Hindi has become so bad that they have started liking my Hindi. Apart from Hindi, I am also comfortable in Urdu.

How was writing dialogue for your forthcoming film Heroine?

Dialogues are based on the story of the film. Every film is different and I have done films of various genres, therefore special attention was paid in scripting the dialogues.

What are your future assignments?

I am working with Nikhil Advani. The shooting for the film will also start in a few days.

Are you satisfied with your achievements?

I am satisfied with whatever I have earned from my work. I had never thought that I will reach this far. I learnt a lot from those I worked with.

According to you, what is the relevance of writing in films?

If a film is like a human body, then the actors are its face, Director its soul and the writer is its backbone. Although people may not give credit to the writer, he is undoubtedly most important element in the film making.
