Close to 1.34 lakh Indian workers have been forced to return to India from Saudi Arabia under the country’s new labour policy which is targeting illegal foreigners who do not have valid labour and residency status. The crackdown has come with the injunction that workers should not be needlessly harassed and there should be no forcible entering of houses. It comes after a seven-month grace period given to workers to get their papers in order. Those who will be forced to return have been promised all help by the Indian government and the relevant ministries. There are some 2.8 million Indian workers in Saudi Arabia. Earlier this year the government had sent a delegation to the country to discuss the possible impact on foreign remittances as a result of the crackdown. But despite New Delhi’s efforts, Riyadh is unrelenting.
