The moment one talks of Uttar Pradesh elections everyone has his own calculation to prove his point. Some are of the view that Haathi (elephant) will make its way despite the dense forest of corruption charges against Mayawati government. There are people who say that if one can read the writing on the wall then it is very clear that Akhilesh Yadav is riding on cycle at a very fast speed and Haathi will not be able to catch this cycle. Congress supporters and strategist are also hoping to spring a surprise and no doubt BJP is also waiting for some miracle to happen. No doubt every candidate and party is leaving no stone unturned to ensure their victory. With team Anna not coming in front like they did it at the time of by-elections on some seats including Hisar, Congress is a bit relieved and, of course, BJP not happy.

I feel that I am lucky enough to watch the last show of a film that was widely discussed during Mrs. Gandhi’s regime. The film was ‘Qissa Kursi Ka’. Ours was joint family and I was the youngest and no one was allowed to see movies. My cousins (who were in college and SFI activists) wanted to see the movie but they also wanted to ensure that my father and uncle does not come to know of it so they used me as shield and took me for the movie. Though I was very young but I enjoyed the movie and still remember wonderful acting of Shabana Azmi as goongi janta (dumb public). I will not go into the whole movie but would touch one aspect of it. There was a scene in the movie where a group of businessmen start a search for a candidate who will do whatever they would ask for or rather obey their orders. When they were moving here and there in search of such a person they stopped at a place where there was a huge crowd. Nowadays we do not see but earlier it was very common that there used to be street shows ‘Tamashas’ and this huge gathering was one such Tamasha in which the Madari, who used to show or conduct ‘Tamasha’ and there used to be a ‘Jhamoora’, pupil of the Madari. The work of the ‘Jhamoora’ was just to say yes to his master, Madari. This group of businessmen was so impressed by the yes manship of this Jhamoora that they took him along with them and handed over the reigns of the country. What I understood from this part of the movie was that the government is basically a puppet in the hands of businessmen or rather corporate houses. And as I am growing older I am also thinking on the lines of the writer and Director of ‘Qissa Kursi Ka’ that Janta (public) is still goongi (dumb)and governments are basically run by the corporate houses. So whatever calculations and strategies might be but the fact remains the same that who can be ‘jhamoora’ of the Corporate houses in Uttar Pradesh. I do not have an iota of doubt that it is corporate houses who calls the shot and not the Aam Admi, who lives in fool’s paradise to think that he elects the government and if this would not have been true then Vajpayee government would not have lost despite the fact that Vajpayee proved to be good economist for Aam Admi. So before drawing any conclusion, do keep a tab that which party is enjoying good relationship with the corporate houses.
