Mahela Jayawardene, who stepped down as Sri Lanka's Twenty 20 captain after losing the World Twenty20 final against the West Indies, said his team failed to handle the "pressure situations" in the title clash.
"I think we tried very hard, but this match changed in three or four overs in the middle. In the pressure situations, we couldn't control the match,” Jayawardene said after 36-run defeat on Sunday. Though he stepped down from Twenty20 captaincy, Jayawardene said he will continue to lead the side in Tests and ODIs until at least the series against Australia in December.
The Sri Lankans have featured in the finals of four ICC World Cups in the last five years but have failed to win any.
West Indies skipper Darren Sammy has said that this victory has proved that the Caribbeans are slowly moving towards reclaiming their past glory.
"We're not trying just to compete any more, we believe we can win against good opposition. We showed signs of that in the last year or so, but we were not winning,” said Sammy. The West Indians, who have struggled at the international level for over two decades, were for a change, among the favourite teams to win the tournament this year.
Sammy also said that an important knock of 26 runs down the order and a couple of wickets in the finals should do his confidence a world of good.
