War of credit

Going by Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri's comparison of the plots of Five Point Someone, written by Chetan Bhagat, and "3 Idiots", scripted by Rajkumar Hirani (TSI, 11-17 January), I find that they certainly seem to have very residual similarities. Even the recognised translations of our Epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, are deemed to be original works, for instance, in Bengali, of Krittibas and Kashiram Das, and not of Valmiki and Krishnadvaipayan Vyas, respectively. So how can the story of "3 Idiots" be totally credited to Chetan Bhagat, where the film obviously has much more elementary to offer.
