The editorial "Why you should stop reading newspapers..." (TSI, Jan 12-18) is sound advice. Fortunately, government is the largest employer in India and they have taken care, courtesy the Sixth Pay Commission. The effect is reflected in the sale of consumer electronics during the last festive season. The government employees will continue to buy two-wheelers and small cars like the Maruti-800. After the recent terror attacks, the government may have to employ more in the defence forces, police, fire services et al. Lastly, if we can monitor the NUREG, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and other programs, money will go to the needy. We have large infrastructure projects like the national highways which will employ men, machinery, cement and the like. There is no need to worry about recession leading to any great depression. Essentially, we need adequate monitoring to eliminate corruption and delays and if that is the case our GDP may keep pace with what we achieved earlier in the good times.
