UP elections: Parties fight it out with slogans

The political parties contesting Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections have filled the state's heartland with catchy and spicy slogans to overcome each other.

Though slogan raising in elections is nothing new, but the spicy and provocative slogans have become a tool for the political parties to downgrade rivals and to impress the voters.

With the Election Commission ordering covering of BSP's elephants in parks, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) gave a slogan "Khula hathi lakh ka, band hathi sawa lakh ka" (If living elephant is worth Rs 1 lakh, then dead jumbo is worth Rs 1.25 lakh).

BSP also gave another slogan "Patthar rakh lo chhati par, button dabao hathi par" (Keep stone on your chest and press the elephant button).

Other parties are also not behind in the slogan race. To cash in on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress has unleashed its slogan "Amethi ka danka, beti Priyanka". Another spicy Congress slogan includes " Sonia nahi ye andhi hai, dusri Indira Gandhi"

Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has also unleashed its slogneering on elctorate. "Desh ke sir ka Taj banega, UP awwal Rajya banega" (UP will be no one state and become country's crown".

According to reports, some contestants in UP and Punjab have hired local journalists and writers to write catchy slogans for them. The writers are being paid Rs 2000 per day for writing the slogans, said sources.

The trend shows that crores are being spent by the politicians for devising heady catchphrase and jingles in the election season.

The first phase of the seven phase Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls are scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
