Unkept promises

 

 

The editorial on the Beijing Olympics was an eye opener. It’s a fact that China has violated many human rights till date and anyone who has raised the voice in the domestic territory has been put behind bars. The event has been marred by a surge in violations of rights of free expression and media freedom. Not only this, abuses of migrant construction workers who were pivotal to Beijing’s infrastructure improvements have increased manifolds. These abuses clearly reflect the failure of the Chinese government to honour its Olympic-related human rights promises. The entire episode also reflects the negligence on the part of the International Olympic Committee in ensuring that China fulfills its commitments.
