MIDDLE EAST : PEACE FORCE

UNITED, WE ARE HERD

Notoriously disparate, Arabs finally plan unity moves

UNITED, WE ARE HERD This is an old joke: if you confine two Arab strategists to a room, they will emerge with three separate declarations. Of late, the joke became a notion but Arab nations didn’t do anything to dispel this notion. Arabs have now come to terms with reality. Arab strategists are collectively planning to float a “Peace Force” for Arab nations on the lines of NATO. Discussions were initiated in this regard at Riyadh, the venue for 13th Arab League summit. The Arab League’s Secretary-General, Amr Moussa said that Arab countries “would no longer depend on Western powers for their security.”

The move was initiated after last year’s Israel-Hizbollah conflict that claimed more than 1,300 lives from both sides. By delaying deployment of the peacekeeping force during the conflict last year, the US and her allies provided time to Israel to unleash its war machines, Arabs believe. It was only when the Israeli Army started suffering setbacks on the northern front that western powers rushed their peacekeeping troops. In the initial days of the conflict, when Lebanese authorities were begging for troops, European nations were busy dickering the size of their contingent.

Arab nations believe US gave time to Israel to go for kill

Resolution soon on Arab plan

Talking to TSI, Ali Fayyad, a key Hizbollah executive, said, “America provided arsenal to Israel when she was supposed to send peacekeeping forces. Israel killed thousands of Lebanese and the world kept watching.” Moussa claims that creating a Pan-Arab force will ensure quick deployment when required. It will be easier for the Arab Army to mingle and restore faith among the victims. A formal resolution is expected to be tabled in the next summit. That will be a lifetime opportunity for Arab strategists to achieve a mirage that they call solidarity.
