After trifurcation of MCD, Congress MLAs now want trifurcation of Delhi Police. On the last day of the monsoon session of Delhi Assembly Congress MLA Mukesh Sharma moved the motion against proposed Delhi Police Bill 2010. He moved the motion “Union government should not pass the proposed Delhi Police Bill 2010 in haste without taking Delhi Legislative Asembly into confidence and demanded that the aforesaid bill be sent to Delhi Asembly for detailed discussion and suggestions of Assembly be included in the interest of the public”.
While moving the motion he criticised the provisions laid in the bill and said “If this bill is passed in the present form then the police commissioner will become dictator and could seize the power of the elected government”. Agreeing with the spirit of the motion Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, “It is shocking and it is like throwing the elected government out of the window. I will write to Home Minister by Monday and convey the sentiments of the House. I will also talk to PM and UPA Chairperson”.
Expressing his concern over the issue, the Urban Development Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said, “If the Bill is passed in the present form then Delhi will become a police state. The question is not of power but the question is what we want to make of Delhi. All departments of the state government would become meaningless and the government would become hostage of Delhi police”.
Speaking at length Mukesh Sharma proposed that for better law and order in Delhi the immediate need is to trifurcate Delhi Police on MCD line. At the end of the debate the motion was put to vote and the motion was passed by voice vote. Only Congress MLAs were present in the House as the opposition members were sent out of the House for three days day before Friday.
