Toxic toads

 

 

Anew study has revealed that poison frogs in central America get hold of their poisonous arsenal from the mites eat, rather than synthesising it themselves as was believed earlier. Found in the rain forests, these frogs eat tiny arachnids, which contain an astonishing range of alkaloids. Some of these alkaloids were later found in the frogs, which consumed them. Though snakes in Japan are known to store the venom of the toads they eat for their defence, the result of this study is indeed very surprising. No fair maiden would want to kiss these frogs for sure!
