The winners of Rs 3,000 are... A good job

This refers to Arindam Chaudhuri’s thought provoking editorial on NREGA (Editorial, TSI June 28- July 11). There is no doubt that Arindam always raises important points in his editorials. He rightly says that the NREGA is a good developmental initiative but successfully implementing the scheme across the nation is just half the job done. This is very unfortunate that NREGA too has been marred with delivery bottlenecks. Arindam has done a good job by raising the point that various schemes like the NREGA are enhancing the purchasing power of the rural people, which in turn is driving up the liquor sale. I am fully agreed with the editor that it needs to be ensured by the government that additional incomes generated by the rural folks are mobilized towards long term productive means. Your latest cover story ‘India’s best colleges’ is very informative. The information about various colleges in the cover story proved very useful for my younger sister.

Mohali It made life easier

My letter is in concern to the special issue of TSI (June 28- July 11). The cover story listing the top colleges of India made the life of the parents, wandering for the admission of their wards, a bit smoother. The story gives a rough idea to the readers in finding suitable colleges for themselves. As soon as the class XII results are declared, a tedious exercise in college hunting starts every year. Nowadays, when even 90 per cent marks can not ensure a seat in your desired college, or/and the desired stream, one can imagine what options are left for the students scoring 80 per cent or below. Students as well as their parents have to face mental trauma of not getting admissions in the “elite” colleges. TSI's effort of redefining the best colleges has come as a big relief for millions. Thanks for making the life of your readers more comfortable while fighting the demon of cut-offs.

Uttar Pradesh The winners of Rs 3,000 are... Time to move on

After passing out class XII two years back, I got confused as to where I should enrol to pursue BBA. The Sunday Indian brought out a special issue on education sector with a long list of the best institutions of India. Short description of new courses was another useful feature in the issue. The articles of and the lists of institutions will definitely help the youngsters like me to take a decision to choose their careers. Professional courses are the only way for a bright and prosperous life. It is seen that hundreds of thousands of boys and girls having their Masters degree are sitting idle for years for a job. On the other hand, a professional course holder – such as an ITI diploma holder – need not wait for a job. So, it is time for the students to opt for professional courses. After saturation in the IT industry, new sectors like bio-technology, beautician, tourism, physiotherapy etc have tremendous potential for jobs.
