Supersized fun

 

 

Animation films have been doing a whole lot of growing up in recent times. Dreamworks’ “Monsters vs Aliens” is one such movie that is not only a delight for the little munchkins, but adults will find themselves guffawing about as many times as the little ones, except at different moments of the film. Great animation meets some great wisecracks in this flick and references to movies like “The Blob”, “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman”, “E.T.”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, “An Inconvenient Truth” only make it all the more entertaining to adults.

It all begins on Susan’s (voice of Reese Witherspoon) wedding day when a meteorite hits Earth, Susan’s wedding venue to be precise, and she just about manages to not get squashed underneath it. But the plutonium in the missile affects her and she grows into a 49-feet, 11-inch giant and gets captured by the military and put into a secret prison facility where she meets other monsters – a buffoonish gelatinous blob called B.O.B (Seth Rogen), Dr. Cockroach (Hugh Laurie), a mad-scientist who had accidentally converted himself into a cockroach, Missing Link (Will Arnett), a physique conscious fish-ape hybrid, and the colossal Insectosaurus. After the same plutonium is an alien Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson), who sends a giant robot to extract the plutonium from Susan and along the way, devastate mankind!

From B.O.B falling in love with a plate of jelly to the President (Stephen Colbert) greeting the aliens with a solo on the electric keyboard are moments that make Monsters vs Aliens worth one’s money. And if you make it to one of the screens showing the movie in 3-D, you’re bound to have an out-of-the-world time!
