Remember how Popeye used spinach to power his muscles? Well, scientists are looking at it as a source for supplying electricity. Much the same way as a solar cell converts sunlight into electricity, the new device will use the proteins from spinach to do the job. The trick as scientists from M.I.T. have figured out, is to keep the protein stable without salt and water, both of which don’t gel well with electronics. The solution was found to be detergent peptide, a dry material which naturally ‘hoards’ water.
