In your last issue (TSI, March 2-8) Prsoon S Majumdar has raised a subject that every sensible person ponders over while visiting a place of interest in India. I do not know whether there is a Freudian explanation to this kind of madness (defacing historical monuments) but I am sure that there is cure for this disease. We have a law to punish these 21st century Vandals but it is imprisoned in the law books. It has never been put into practice. Punish these culprits severly. Impose strict fines on the offenders. The disease will be eradicated. But who will do this? In the recent past, a great political leader of our country was about to sell the Taj Mahal. Well, to them the world is a market and everything here can be bought or sold. In Singapore you are fined for spitting on the road, in India you are allowed to roam about freely even after damaging one historical monument. All you need is a pocket full of money.
