Mumbai Salsa, the first directorial venture by National Award winning script writer Manoj Tyagi (who liberally ‘borrows’ situations from TV soaps like ‘Friends’), although suffering from careless editing, still retains a fresh flavour. Exploring the twists and turns of the relationships of eight people who hang out at a club – Mumbai Salsa, this movie makes a brave attempt at steering away from tired clichés. Case in point, when Maya (Manjari Phadnis in a standout performance) is involved in a one-night stand with a stranger (Vir Das), the audience is spared the guilt trip. Instead the movie focuses on the awkwardness and stupidity of the couple’s predicament. Moments like these keep you hanging in there till the end and keeps the movie from being too predictable. But continuity issues and tacky production take the sheen away from the bold, new age treatment and performances like Manjari’s and Vir Das’.
