The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday said the Centre has approved Rs 120 crore for conservation of Asia's largest fresh water lake Wullar in Bandipora district and the work will begin next month.

"The Centre has approved Rs 120 crore for conservation and development of Wullar lake, 55 km from here, and the work is expected to start next month," Forests and Environment Minister Mian Altaf Ahmad said here.

Ahmad, who on Wednesday visited the site identified for taking up the conservation work, said the job has been assigned to a team of officers led by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.

He said the government is also mulling to constitute Wullar Development Authority.
