A Session Court of Kolkata on Friday adjourned the Rouvanjit Rawla case till January 31. The Court was expected to come out with the verdict on the petition filed by the alleged perpetrators of the crime. Hearing on the petition is already been concluded.

The perpetrators Sunirmal Chakravarthi, principal, La Martiniere for Boys and three teachers – Garnian, Partho Dutta, and David Raun had moved the court against the inquiry report. The teachers and the Principal had moved the petition challenging the slapping of Sec 305 of Indian Penal Code, which is used in case of abatement to suicide.

A class VIII student Rouvanjit Rawla committed suicide on February 12, 2010 after being caned by the Principal. After his death, Rounjavit's father Ajay Rawla filed a complaint against the principal and three teachers of La Martiniere for Boys for subjecting his son to corporal punishment.

An inquiry by the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), an autonomous body under the Central government, found the principal Sunirmal Chakravarti and three teachers, Garnian, Partho Dutta and David Raun, guilty of abatement.
