At a cafe in Geneva, Prashanto Banerji happens to meet a couple of compatriots just back from the racist Austria. Their first-hand account of violent racism rampant in Austria being so unbelievable, led him to wonder, “How green is my valley?” (TSI, Dec 21-27). Catcalls from young boys in Austria is common, calling Asians and others “Paki, go back”, Paki being the synonym for all. There are many other countries like Ireland, Czech Republic, Colombia and Australia where racism is prevalent. Who knows, before long, time will change and the spirit of internationalism will transcend all forms of narrow racism and parochial feelings, making us ready to reach out and grasp the hands of people throughout the world. Also the time for Banerji saab to buy his tickets to ”that land of unbridled natural beauty…”
