The ‘season’ed traveller goes now
Unless skiing, skating and ice fishing is your thing, stay away during the freezing winters. Instead spring up between April-May or savour the looong summer days (June to early September)!
‘Savour’ faire
Heard of leib or ‘black’ bread? Try it out in Estonia! Pork and potatoes rule but vegetarians can survive on preparations of garden vegetables. Look out for voorst (sausages), verivorst (pig’s-blood black pudding). Semolina pudding and sweet cakes usually follow.
Get to work
Go bog walking and canoeing at Sooma National Park and Endla Nature Reserves. Or else you could try the Kasmu Maritime Museum in Lahemaa National Park where sailing, rowing and diving are especially inviting in the summer. Winter in Estonia is of course perfect for skiing and snow-biking.
What’s the word?
Remember to add tere (good) to hommikust (morning), päevast (afternoon) and õhtust (evening). Tänan is the Estonian way of saying thank you.
Keepsake courtesies
Amber and local folk art are a good buy. Take home dolls dressed in traditional Estonian fashion.
