Reservation issue strikes again

 

 

When groups are playing for high stakes and violence (Gujjars Vs Meenas- When the dye is caste 17-6-2007) is seen as a bargaining chip, things will obviously be difficult. While reservation has benefitted many from the disadvantaged groups, it has also failed to reach others, even as it privileges the winning of political entitlements rather than true empowerment. It is Meenas’ success in using their ST status to dominate government services, including the police, that has got the Gujjars hankering after the same status. And with a limited size of the pie, the Meenas will brook no new claimants. Both wise counsel and a firm hand will be required.
