Remake: rarely justifed

 

 

This is with reference to ‘Zero Stars..’ (TSI September 13, 2007). Nothing written could ever fully describe the atrocious manner in which Ram Gopal Verma remade Sholay. One wishes that his tongue in cheek statement “it was an attempt by him to pay tribute to the original makers” be banned forever. He however deserves full marks for testing the paying public’s patience and torturing their senses for as long as the cinematic trash lasted. Oh! When will this craze for remakes end! It is not that we lack stories but the audacity to go one-up on the original, drives the new corps of producers and directors on an ego trip, resulting in such disasters. Thakur, Veeru, Jai, Basanti and the dreaded Gabbar Singh were caricatures of an inspired mind that for decades have haunted the cine goers. The new version succeeds in obliterating their very memory, thanks to Ram Gopal Verma!
