Reality bites

 

 

In the May 14 issue of The Sunday Indian, the article written by Ms. Archana Dalmia on how the electronic news media has become a shameless means of mass entertainment is a hard reality today. I completely support her point of view. But, if we probe a bit deeper, we would face yet another disturbing truth about the news media. The modern urban, nouve riche class, who is used to maintaining a certain level of ‘can’t-do-without-it’ lifestyle, rears to move out of their claustrophobic daily routine with a dose of entertainment and surreal news programs. This, therefore, leads them to lose their interest in viewing serious news bulletins of national or international importance. In a bid to sustain themselves, in the presence of mass-entertainment channels and unfriendly viewership, the ‘bechara’ news channels have been left with no alternative but to cross their line.

The need of the hour is to come out with an alternative solution so that the interest of both the news media and its audience is taken care of.
