Brahmeshwar Singh, the head of the chief of the outlawed upper-caste militia Ranvir Sena, was shot to dead in the Arra town of Bihar early Friday morning.
Singh had been out for a morning walk when unidentified gunmen accosted him and pumped bullets into him. Tension has been high in the area since the murder with supporters of Singh, or Mukhiyajee as he used to be called, refusing to allow the police to take his body for autopsy.
The supporters have also torched two tankers and an auto. Police patrolling in the area has also been heightened.
Charged with 22 cases of carnage, Singh has been absolved in 17 which have come up for hearing before several lower courts and is on bail in the other five. Speaking to TSI about a year ago, Singh had said he had nothing to do with the Ravir Sena and was innocent.
